The National Museum is the largest and at the same the most important Czech museum. It collects about 13.6 millions items, the most important of them are installed in many buildings of the institution. Its history starts in 1818 under the name Vlastenecké muzeum v Čechách (Patriotic Museum in Bohemia). The main building has been forming the Vista point of Wenceslas square. It collects vast mineralogical, petrographical, botanical and zoological relics. There are also historical, etnographical and music collections in other buildings.

The Jewish Museum is the largest museum of this kind in Europe. It includes six buildings you can visit: Pinkasova synagoga, Maiselova synagoga, Španělská synagoga, Starý židovský hřbitov, Klausová synagoga a Obřadní síň (Ceremonial Hall). The Jewish Museum originated at about 1906 and the primary idea was to conserve valuable artistic objects from the Prague synagogues in the jewish town which was beeing demolished that time. Of course during the nazi occuppation the museum was closed and in 1950 the museum was nationalized and its activity was limited. Nowadays the museum is one of the most important ones thank to large collections (over 100 000 books and objects mostly from Bohemia and Moravia).
